Reversible Girls Pinafore Dress Tutorial February 26, 2008

This is a 3 part tutorial. You will need to click on the link on the bottom of the page to get to Part 2.

I've noticed lots of hits to my blog from people googling 'reversible pinafore tutorial' and such. I'm sure they were disappointed when all they found was the pics I posted of the dress I made here. I made another dress a couple of days ago and put together a semi-tutorial to go along with it. I say semi because you will still need to make your own pattern. This tutorial should help though because, for me, figuring out how to put it together was the hardest part. I hope someone can use this cause putting together this tut is a lot of work!

First, you will need to make your pattern. I can tell you that this pinafore fits Shay who is 2 1/2 and thin, as a dress. It fits Ayla who is just about 4 and also thin best with pants underneath because the back would be a bit too short. You will probably need to play with it a little like I did. You can see all the extra pieces of muslin I kept pinning on to make it bigger and get the right size. To give you an idea of the dimensions I used for the front piece: diagnol from top left corner of shoulder to bottom right corner of dress is 25"; shoulder strap 3 1/8" wide; distance between shoulder straps 5 1/2"; distance between bottom corners of dress is  22 1/4"

Pattern front

Pattern front. You will want to draw a line down the center of this piece, fold it, and make sure it is completely symmetrical. Trim where necessary, or pin on extra muslin to make larger if necessary.

Pattern side

Pattern side. You only need one of this piece. Make sure it fits perfectly from both shoulders and simply reverse it when cutting the fabric you're using for the dress.

Those are just adorable!

Thanks, Jennifer! It’s actually just one dress, with a different print on each side. The girls took turns modeling.

I’m totally impressed, and not just because I can’t do that myself. ;)

This is really cute.

These are so cute. I love the pink polka-dot. Great project and you did a wonderful job putting it together.

That’s so cute! I can barely follow a pattern, though. I’m not sure I’m ready for “freehand” sewing! But I’m bookmarking this anyway, just in case I feel brave one day.

I used your tutorial to make Easter dresses for my girls and they turned out so cute! I got lots of comments on them, so thanks for the help! Here are a couple pictures of the dresses, one hanging up and one with the girls wearing them. I couldn’t get them to stand still. That’s why they’re sitting! Thanks again!

I absolutely love these dresses! The non-reversible option to this dress is relatively easy, but when you add more fabric and need your seams to look good on both sides, it makes it a little more complicated to figure out how to piece it all together, but you made it look easy! Thanks!

Thank you! I was trying to figure out how to do this and now I don’t have to. Hooray!

Gorgeous! I’m going to try to make one. I’ll have to make mine a bit shorter…my girls are not yet walking. They will be soon, though! Is there a Flikr group to post photos?

This is great! I’ve been looking for something just like this for my daughter. I love that it’s reversible. Thanks for sharing!

Quick question…do you sew the neckline? I didn’t see that mentioned.

Thanks!

I love this dress! Here is one on my blog (http://www.mamadidit.blogspot.com) that I made for my cousin’s little girl - she’s turning 1 this weekend and the size I made will fit her as a top until she is at least 2. I used domes at the shoulders for ease of use on littlies

excuse my model (my almost 2 year old son) he wasn’t impressed about wearing a girls top

Thanks for the instructions

Lisabetta Says:

Love the advice. Thank you.

Nicole Says:

My mom used to make me dresses like that when I was 4. That was 30 years ago!
They were my favorite dresses of all time - the felt soft.
